Hello everyone,
I'm intending on using audiomoths to collect drumming data for ruffed grouse and I'm having a hard time choosing an appropriate sample rate and gain. I'm assuming a lower sample rate is better due to the low frequency of ruffed grouse, but I'm unfamiliar with the use of these devices. Any help is appreciated.
Hi Seth, 8kHz sample rate will probably do the job and save on data storage. You would, however, cut off some of the higher frequency impulses if the grouse is in close proximity to the device, as some the impulses may go beyond the audible range, maybe even into the ultrasonics. If you wanted to record the whole drum impulse I would record over 48kHz. I would initially keep the gain at mid-level and see how it goes. If the amplitude is clipped on the recordings you would need to reduce the gain. Thanks, Andy
