It won't work without a pre-amp. Most hydrophones are just bare piezo transducers that require a high-impendence amplifier and a bias resistor to match the expected plug-in-power input of AudioMoth. The Aquarian PA1 amplifier - https://www.aquarianaudio.com/pa1.html - will almost certainly work with the Benthos AQ-18 hydrophone and it will allow you to then plug it directly into the AudioMoth USB Microphone, AudioMoth Dev or AudioMoth 1.2..0 device (with the additional 3.5mm jack).Aquarian also have two hydrophones - A5 and H2d - which already include this amplifier and can be plugged directly into AudioMoth without the need to use an additional amplifier.
