I'm trying to use an external mic with my AudioMoth and researched one that should work for my needs, namely the Smart Clippy EM272 mic. I didn't realize at the time I bought it that it uses a TRRS plug -- one with three rings instead of two. I'm wondering if that makes a difference vs a TRS plug? Because all I'm getting in my recordings using that external mic is steady 100% static.
For reference:
* My file metadata shows "using external microphone", so the AM indeed knows an external mic is there. It does not say "using external microphone" when the mic is unplugged, so the AM knows when an external mic is not there.
* I flashed the firmware with the batteries removed, a tip I saw elsewhere in the forums. I tried this both with the mic plugged in and unplugged. That didn't work.
* For a 3.5mm jack, I'm using a CUI SJ2-35464A-SMT-TR, which I'd seen recommended elsewhere.
* Attached is a photo of the soldering job to confirm it looks fine.
* The mic works as expected when I use it with other devices, such as my computer.
* The AudioMoth's on-board mic works fine, and the AM correctly ends and starts files when microphones are changed mid-recording.
Guesses at the possible problem(s):
* Maybe AudioMoths don't like TRRS plugs? I couldn't find anything about that.
* Maybe I was sent a faulty 3.5mm jack. I probably should have bought a few just in case.
* Maybe something is up with my AudioMoth's hardware supporting external mics. I sure hope not, since the backlog for AMs has been so long!
Is there anything else I should be checking for?
